| Overhauling EU regulation of fluorinated gases |
|
March 2011 | Read the report This report, resulting from technical, legal and policy research, reveals over 6.4 gigatonnes of untapped CO2 equivalent mitigation exists from effective overhaul and improved implementation of EU laws regulating fluorinated gases (f-gases). Our work on f-gases represents the first component of our rapid climate mitigation strategy. We conceive rapid climate mitigation as complementary actions to long term stabilisation of CO2 concentrations that can be implemented rapidly and which scientists agree will result in near-term reductions in temperature increases. Many common f-gases, such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are short lived climate forcers. Unlike CO2, which remains the most important long term contributor to climate change and persists in the atmosphere for centuries, the powerful warming effects of these emissions can be stopped in years to decades following effective regulation. |
